#393 - Christmas Celebrations, A December Wedding, and Our Live Christmas Show

A rare Sunday release for us! Chuck and I catch up on the last few weeks of our lives. We talk about assorted Christmas celebrations and how we felt this year, spirit-wise. We talk about going to Virginia for the wedding of our dear friend (and onetime podcast guest) Katy and try to figure out why traveling causes me so much stress. I briefly mention the film Sorry To Bother You, Chuck talks about watching the movie Birdbox. We close with a recap of the comedy show we did a few weeks ago at the Comedy Connection in East Providence and how we felt about the night and what we learned from it.

#392 - Is "Die Hard" a Christmas Movie?

Lou Perella joins us this week for a fun look at a fun movie. Apparently some people don't believe Die Hard is a Christmas movie, so we say we're going to record a commentary track for the movie that proves it is. It is (delightfully) our flimsiest premise yet, as we don't do a lot of commenting on the movie, and instead discuss what makes something a Christmas movie, the meaning of Christmas spirit, and how much fun it is to do impressions of Alan Rickman. It's a fun conversation over one of our favorite films!

#391 - Us The Duo, Gift Ideas, and the Avengers: Endgame Trailer

We start with a long aside about Chuck having to return a gift that I was a part of for him a few years ago. I find old emails about the scenario and laughs are had. We plug our upcoming comedy show and Chuck tells me about his appearance on another podcast and we question whether he came across as a dick. We then talk about dating relationships and how they are complicated in 2018. We talk about the Avengers 4 trailer, then Chuck tells me about the new Us The Duo Christmas special on Amazon Prime. After that, we discuss gift-giving philosophies and tips for this time of year. We close with a discussion about the NVIDIA Shield and how well it works for old video game emulation.

#390 - Entitled Fans, Pop-Punk Christmas Albums, and the NVIDIA Shield

We start with Chuck bragging about the soups a friend dropped off just before the show. Somehow this leads to us discussing food expiration dates, which I promise you is more interesting than it looks in this description. We talk about MxPx's Christmas re-release (and new track), as well as Jon Feldman's hinting of a Goldfinger Christmas EP. From there, we talk about entitled fans and what leads people to act like...well...jerks. Chuck tells me about his search for a new video game emulation device and tells me about the decision he made. We close with an extended plug for our upcoming Christmas show!

#389 - The TESD Christmas Special, Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Giving Motivations

We are joined this week by Super Retro Throwback Reviews host Steven Christina, Jr. Things go hilariously off the rails right off the bat and I lose it twice in the first ten minutes. (By "lose it," I mean laugh uncontrollably, not yell at Chuck again.) Chuck tells us about the biopsy on his nose from a few weeks ago - does he have nose cancer? Will he need a Tycho Brahe-like prosthetic? Will anyone get this Tycho Brahe reference? Anyway, Chuck talks about editing the Tell 'Em Steve-Dave Christmas podcast and we discuss positivity and negativity online. We talk about our experience at the Warren tree lighting, then Chuck tells us about his trip to Red Bank to see the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Chuck provides us with a very brief review of the newest Grinch movie. We close with a brief discussion about whether the motivation for giving to charity should impact the giving itself.

Gina tries to teach us about American History with mixed results. Chuck talks about some of the issues that came up on a long vacation with four generations of family. I talk about throwing my back out helping a friend move.

We segue into a discussion of horror movies and stories that have stayed with us long after the stories end. We discuss the new Halloween movie and also try to convince Ray to watch the Paranormal Activity series. After that, Chuck and Ray try to convince me to watch Eli Roth's horror documentary. Chuck tells a bizarre story from his youth that relates to a current political race in the area. Ray tells us about his experience with Halloween as a youth and how the relationship has changed up to and including fatherhood. We revisit the topic of horror stories that have stayed with us. Chuck talks about the original Pet Sematary movie and reveals Gina's amazing detective skills, then we close with a discussion about adapting novels to movies.

#360 - Our Weekend At Big Apple Comic-Con

After last week's amazing interview episode (seriously, Casey Jost is such a good dude!), we reconvene in Chuck's kitchen to record a recap episode. We talk about the birth of our "Avengers" bit and how it went over at the Comedy Connection in Rhode Island. We then took the show on the road to NYC to perform it at the Big Apple Comic-Con. What colorful characters did we interact with there? How did the show go over? And man oh man, where did we EAT in New York? For the first time in podcast history, I was more excited about a meal than Chuck was. I can't believe it either. Hear how we befriended Jennifer Cihi and Johnathon Schaech and listen to two comedians navigate the unfamiliar, unmarked path of pop-culture-multimedia-comedy!

We knew NOTHING about how to play this game going in...and that shows! Listen to us struggle with the rules, figure out the rules, then break the rules as we play through a round of this game. Did The Thing destroy us all, or did the humans escape the outpost and save humanity? Listen up!!!!

#352 - The Crushing Weight of Responsibilities and Black Panther

After some quick plugs, Chuck tells us all about some ridiculous "adult" responsibility things he's had to deal with recently. After he finishes relating his tale(s) of woe, we wonder aloud if adult life is just going to be like this forever. We try to find the good in the situations and laugh at how poorly I would have fared in similar situations. Chuck tells me about his amazing Valentine's dinner, I relate the story of my very good Pal-entine's Dinner. We talk about the great time (and sandwiches) we had at The Malted Barley's beer release party. After that, we dive into our spoiler-free review of the new movie Black Panther. Once we finish our impressions there, we let everyone know we're going to dive into spoilers and then do so.

#351 - Streaming Music, The Venom Trailer, and Chuck vs. Best Buy

Once we promote our social media accounts and our upcoming shows, we get started with some listener emails! The concept of streaming music versus the concept of owning music, live streaming and the future of the internet, voice actors versus Hollywood actors for voice acting jobs, digital comics versus print comics, and stickers on fruit. We discuss them all with the expected amount of aplomb. From there, we talk about the Venom teaser trailer and our feelings on the movie, and Chuck gives me some exciting news about one of our favorite bands. We talk about cringeworthy things we've (I've) done in the name of love. We close with a story of Best Buy's terrible customer service toward Chuck and end on a cliffhanger - will Best Buy do the right thing, or will they expose themselves as a soulless corporation, incapable of empathy and therefore undeserving of fair treatment?

#350 - Brad's Dad's Comic Strips, The Cloverfield Paradox, and Chuck Defeats A Troll

Once we promote our social media accounts and our upcoming shows, I tell Chuck about the comic strips my dad mailed to me. Like, in the mail. The postal service. Not electronic. Snail mail. We talk about the sweet enamel pins we received from our friends at eerie Face, then Chuck tells me about his fancy dinner at the Dorrance in Providence. We talk about a listener's email, then our experience with the Super Bowl. After the Super Bowl, we watched The Cloverfield Paradox and talk about our feelings on the movie itself and also its place in cinema/streaming history. We discuss Chuck's computer drama at length and how it was saved by Backblaze, who is also a new sponsor of the podcast. We close out the episode by Chuck relating a tale of confronting an internet troll and having the situation work out in kind of the best way possible.

#349: Chuck's Ebay Fight, Deep Blue Sea 2, and Ant-Man & The Wasp

It's just Chuck and Brad this week! We promote ourselves, Chuck tells me about a sweet new enamel pin he received from Reicheru Art, then he tells me about an eBay fight he had about a month ago that he specifically saved for the podcast. It's one of the best "Chuck's Petty Printouts" ever! After that, we get into the news about new tours for The Lawrence Arms and Frank Turner (separately). Chuck tells me about Deep Blue Sea 2 and I try to figure out other water-based horror movies. We talk about the trailer for Ant-Man & The Wasp and talk about our level of excitement for that versus other Marvel movies. We follow up on our stories about Nobody's Boyscout and then close up shop with our recent Royal Rumble party. A fun, back-to-earth podcast for the two of us.

#348 - The Story of The Malted Barley

Recorded on location at The Malted Barley in Providence, RI. We are joined this week by Malted Barley owner Ron Koller and a rotating cast of staff members at The Malted Barley - Brian, Cory, Rich, and Kolby. We learn about their roles and stories, and how they fit into the larger story of Ron traveling the country to open a craft beer specialty restaurant. How did he decide on Providence, on the location, on the menu? Listen and find out, baby! AND THEY DROP THEIR NEXT STEPS ON US AS WELL WHAT WHAT!!!!

#347 - The Story of Nic Hallenbeck and Nobody's Boyscout

We're joined this week by Nic Hallenbeck and Sean Murphy, two pieces of local band Nobody's Boyscout! They have an album coming out and wanted to talk about it! But first, we dove into Nic's entire backstory (having already gotten Sean's backstory in episode 273). How did Nic rebel in highschool? Did he have a bowl cut, rat tail, or both? So many questions! We eventually work our way to the start of this band and how they came to making this new album, titled In Tongues and available starting this Saturday.

It's that time of year! It's (part one of) our annual "Brammies and Chammies" awards! This is somehow the NINTH time we've done a best-of episode like this! Wow! Episode 344: Chuck's Nintendo Scam and A Look Back At 2017

We kick off this week with a discussion about some awesome enamel pins Chuck received from the good people at Wicked Critter Co. Ill admit it -they're pretty great, even if Chuck's the only one getting hooked up*. From there, Chuck tells me about his scam to make enough money to get a Nintendo Switch (plus games), an NES Classic (above retail), and an SNES Classic (plus a wireless controller) for a total of $0 spent. And he did it!! Wow! NOTE: If I don't seem impressed when Chuck's telling me about it, it's because I'm not surprised he's able to pull these things off.
After that, we talk about our feelings concerning Chuck and Brad's Best Christmas Show Ever, which was December 21. After that, we look back, week by week, at ALL of 2017 and talk about the things we did artistically and personally and how they shaped us as performers and individuals.
