#430 - We get In-Depth about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

A unique episode this week! A few weeks ago, we guested on the podcast "Geeking Out With Shades and Sketch" to talk about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' movies from 1990 and 2014. We had such a good time and shared so much about the Ninja Turtles in general, we asked Shades and Sketch if we could release the conversation as an episode of OUR podcast as well! So this is it! We talk about how history with the turtles, how we felt about the comics, toys, tv shows, and movies, then break down the "original" live-action film as well as the rebooted 2014 version. A super fun talk!

Note from Chuck: During this talk on GOWSAS (please call their podcast "Gow-Sass" from now on), I realized I had never really deeply discussed my feelings about the turtles on OUR own podcast, despite ten years and roughly 650 hours of recording. So I KNEW we needed to put this recording into our "canon." Super happy the Gow-Sass gals (please refer to them as the "Gow-Sass gals" from now on) were down for it!

We might get some new listeners this week - welcome! We talk briefly about our days/weeks, then Chuck tells me about a new product he bought. I think it's asinine and he tries to convince me otherwise. (I'm not convinced.) After that ridiculousness, we talk about the recent screening of "Pick It Up: Ska In The 90s" in Somerville, MA. We tell the story behind our night, then throw to a Q&A recorded after the screening with Dave McWane from Big D and the Kids Table. He's a smart dude!

WHOA MAMA! We start with Chuck giving me a delicious sweet treat as repayments for ninja turtle-related favors! We offer some Chuck and Brad updates, then read some listener emails and discuss possible names for our listeners. Chuck discusses the TESD video "Comic Book Men: On The Road." Chuck tries to convince me to watch some scary movies for the upcoming Halloween and I am somewhat hesitant. We talk about our poker night, our trip to the new restaurant "Union Burrito" in Riverside, then Chuck tells me about the decadent buffet he experienced at the "Nordic Lodge." We talk about recording a Ninja Turtle podcast with our pals at Geeking Out with Shades and Sketch, then going to our friend's "Meatfest" cookout. We close by talking about the split between Sony and Disney regarding Spider-Man. What will this mean going forward?

We start out with Chuck getting vulnerable and talking honestly about some frustrations he has felt lately in his professional life. From there, we move to more positive news, celebrating his new Providence Monthly column. Chuck reveals an argument he had on Reddit about charging people from chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant. We discuss The Lion King (2019) becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. We discuss feature film The Hunt being pulled from theaters. I talk about a book I recently read and how little I enjoyed it. Just a brutal slog through 450 pages. Woof. Chuck talks about some restaurants he recently tried and I get hungry. We then offer a spoiler-free discussion of the new Fast & Furious spin-off "Hobbs and Shaw," then, we make it very clear we're going to spoil things...and then discuss the film in greater depth.

The lovely and talented Gina Mastrostefano joins us this week! We discuss what our fans should be named and can't come up with much. From there, we talk about The Lion King (2019) and live-action storytelling of animated films in general. Chuck tells me all about their weekends in New Jersey and how they made him feel creatively. We talk about what foods are appropriate to bring into a movie theater, then get into the main event. We offer a spoiler-free review of the new Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood. We are joined this week by comedian/filmmaker/self-proclaimed spiritual guru Ray Harrington! He is ostensibly on to talk about the screening of "Undependent" at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, but first, I have to talk about my dumb social life. Why did this one woman ghosting me bother me so much? From there, we revisit Chuck's Trash Travails, as the social media response to Chuck's addressing of the issue was unexpected. From there, Ray tells us the story of "Undependent" and gives us some cool behind-the scenes info on this very funny project.

Back in the studio/my kitchen this week! Chuck FINALLY reveals the name and nature of the project he worked on with Ray Harrington - a sitcom pilot named Undependent! We talk about its upcoming premiere at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and Chuck talks about how he got involved. Good stuff. Chuck then laments some issues he has had with local trash pickup, and we discuss the role of the trashman in modern society. Very highbrow! After that, we talk about my family's recent visit to the area and I recap all the things we did and all the food we ate!
